Homeschool Highlights {August}
Sep 18, 2016
I am very late with our Homeschool Highlights {August} post but that is mainly because of computer issues and not having access to my pictures for a while and not a lack of schooling going on around here! August was a wonderfully productive month of homeschool!
Language Arts
Little Bug continues to work through All About Reading Level 2 even though her reading level has soared above AAR Level 2! There are other components of this curriculum (beyond the phonics) that are beneficial for Little Bug so that I why we are completing Level 2.
Little Bug also reads out loud to me on most days. I typically pick the book she reads aloud to me and we spend about 10 or so minutes a day with Little Bug reading to me!
I certainly do not have to coax Little Bug to read. I find her reading on her own all throughout the day which is a lovely sight!
Sweet Pea is working through Confessions of a Homeschooler’s K4/5 Curriculum. This has been great phonics practice to prepare her to start AAR Level 1! There are Word Family activities as well as beginning sound activities. She picked up on how to do them very quickly.
We are reading through the Laura Ingalls Wilder series and we are currently reading By the Shores of Silver Lake.
Handwriting Without Tears is going well! It’s the last thing we do during our Morning School time. Since a lesson only takes 5-10 minutes tops, Sarge joins us at the table and I give him a puzzle to work on. Usually, by the end of the 10 minutes all the puzzle pieces are on the floor, but at least he feels included and it won’t be long before he will figure out how to work the puzzles. While the girls are doing their handwriting page, I try to help Sarge do his puzzle.
Math
I had Little Bug completing 2 Horizon Math 1 lessons per day for a while because the lessons were so easy and a review of the K level. Towards the end of August we went back to 1 lesson a day even though the lessons are still pretty much a review. Horizons 1 has tests so that has been a new experience for Little Bug! She has aced all her tests!
Sweet Pea loves math! She is enjoying working through BJU K5 Math. We are also having fun playing many math games and doing some fun math activities.
Bible
We are reading through The Jesus Storybook Bible! After we read a story, we pray together and go over our monthly Bible Memory Verse. Praying together often sets the mood for our homeschool day and it is a very important part of our day!
Classical Conversations
We started our second year of CC this month! Our first couple of weeks were fabulous. We fell right back into our routine of moving right into our CC Review Time after reading the Bible. Both girls are learning the Memory Work like it is no big deal. It is amazing how much their little minds can take in and retain after hearing something just a few times. The songs and chants help so much. We are off to another wonderful year of Classical Conversations!
Learning Time with Sarge
Sarge turned 2 this month and while I won’t start official preschool with him until he is 3 or 4, I am intentionally getting him ready to one day join our homeschool even now! At the itty bitty age of two, all this looks like is reading books to him daily. He stopped wanting to sit in my lap to read books, so I had to figure out a way that I could still read to him daily because it is that important!
During the month of August, I started getting the girls working on a very short learning activity (usually has to do with CC) so that I can take Sarge into his bedroom and read to him with no distractions! This is working wonderfully! I love starting my school day with my smallest student. I read to him for 10-15 minutes before he goes into his pack n play for his Independent Playtime while I do (most) Morning School with the girls.
And that was August! It will be time for September’s post before I know it!
