How to Implement CC at Home

The purpose of this post is to give you an idea of how we implement Classical Conversations at home.

It is really very simple!

That’s the thing with CC. You, as the mom and educator of your child, have the freedom to dive into the Memory Work as you see fit for your homeschool and your individual children.

Some simply go over the Memory Work and recite it as they did with their class on Community Day. (That’s us during the average CC Review time in our homeschool!)

Some dig a little deeper by reading books that correlate with the Memory Work. (We do this, but not for every single piece of Memory Work every single week. Just what interests us!)

And some dig even deeper with activities, crafts, unit studies, notebooking pages, field trips, etc. that expound on the Memory Work even further. (We do activities and crafts every so often and not every week!)

So you see, you can keep this as simple - or as complicated - as you would like.

Here is how we keep it very simple!

Our homeschool day begins with a Bible story and then moves right into CC Memory Work Review time. The review time takes approximately 30 minutes.

The first 15 minutes of Review Time are spent reviewing that week’s Memory Work. We recite the Memory Work for Timeline, History, Science, Geography, English, Latin and Math using one of these 4 ways:

  1. Popsicle Review - Pick a stick. Each color stands for one of the subjects. Recite the subject you pick! (Example: Red= Science.)

  1. Beach Ball Review - Write each subject name (History, Science, Geography, etc) on the Beach Ball. Throw the ball to the child. Recite the subject where their right thumb lands!

  1. Cube Review - Roll the cube and recite the subject that the cube lands on!

  1. Sticker Book Review - My girls LOVE Usborne sticker books. They recite a subject and then get a sticker to place on their book!

If we want to hear the Memory Work (instead of trying to recite it), we use these methods:

  1. CC app - there is now an app for Apple & Android! Some say it is priced too much for what you get, but I think the $15 is worth it for the convenience of having all the Memory available on the tablet! It includes the History, Math and Latin songs. I do wish it included the Timeline song, but it does not.
  2. Watching videos from Community Day - I record the tutor introducing the new Memory Work each week so we can watch the videos throughout the week at home.
  3. Audio 3-Disk Set - CC has a set of 3 CDs for sale that includes all the Memory Work. If you buy one "extra" (in other words, these CDs are not required to do CC), I would let these CDs be it! Keep it in the car and play the Memory Work as you ride around town! There are 3 CDs in the package. One has the Timeline, one has the Memory Work by week and one has the Memory Work by subject. I tend to keep the CD with the Memory Work by week in the car and I keep the CD with Memory Work by subject in the house along with the CD that has the Timeline song.

The last 15 minutes of Review Time is spent focusing in on one or two subjects. This is where we dig a little deeper by reading books (most of the time) or doing a fun activity or craft (occasionally). Here is our schedule:

  • Day 1: History & Timeline
  • Day 2: Science
  • Day 3: Geography & Math
  • Day 4: English & Latin

Next, I will write a post about our first week of CC and how we implemented everything at home during our CC Review Time!
