2nd Grade Curriculum with Classical Conversations

This post (and the one I will post about Kinder Curriculum) is redundant to this post however, I got to thinking (again) about what a complete program Classical Conversations Foundations is and I decided to write this out and bold everything that is included in the Classical Conversations Foundations program.

Take a look! Besides choosing an LA & Math program, Classical Conversations includes everything else. I don’t have to put together elaborate unit studies to study the middle ages or outer space (although, with CC, if you so desire, you still can make elaborate unit studies to go with the Memory Work but it is not required and not necessary in the least bit!).

This is Little Bug’s 2nd Grade curriculum line up for the school year. As I write it all out here, subject by subject, I can see that it is so full yet I am not stressed at all in implementing anything you see here! That is amazing because CC is amazing!

2nd Grade Curriculum

(with Classical Conversations Foundations as the backbone)

Bible:

(Choices made by me)

  • The Jesus Storybook Bible & DVDs
  • The Adventure Bible for Kids
  • Apologia's Who is God?

Reading/Phonics:

(Choices made by me)

  • All About Reading Level 2
  • Explode the Code Books 3 & 4
  • Read chapter books out loud to mom
  • Read Alouds - chapter books read out loud by mom

Handwriting:

(Choices made by me)

  • Handwriting Without Tears
  • A Reason for Handwriting

Spelling:

(Choices made by me)

  • All About Spelling Level 1 (According to CC, Spelling in 2nd grade isn't necessary as it will be covered in the Essentials program which begins at age 9. I am doing AAS with Little Bug because she wants to do it.)

English Grammar:

  • Memory Work - Grammar facts including pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions

Latin:

  • Memory Work - Verb endings of the first conjugation

Math:

(Choices made by me)

  • Horizons Math 1
  • Memory Work - Multiplication tables up to 15×15, common squares and cubes, as well as basic geometry formulas, algebraic laws and unit conversions
  • Math Games

History:

  • Memory Work - 24 history sentences from Pre-Reformation to Modern history
  • Memory Work - 161 events and people in a chronological timeline from Creation to Modern America

Science:

  • Memory Work - 24 science facts about Ecology, Astronomy and Physical Science
  • 12 science experiments
  • 12 science projects

Geography:

  • Memory Work - Over 100 locations and geographic features in Europe, Asia and select parts of the world
  • Blob Mapping - learn more about this here

Art & Music:

(All of this is covered over 24 weeks during our 1 day per week Community Day. You can certainly explore all of this more at home as most everything you need to do so can be found in your Foundations Guide.)

  • Exposure to drawing techniques
  • Music Theory
  • Tin Whistle
  • 6 Great Artists and related projects
  • Introduction to orchestra
  • 3 classical composers

Public Speaking:

(Every child gives a 2-3 minute oral presentation in their classroom during Community Day.)

  • 24 oral presentations

Physical Education:

  • 30 minute class with our CC Community after class and lunch! (I did not bold this because it is not a part of CC's standard program, however, our community is offering PE classes to the children which we are taking advantage of!)

Are you wondering, “How long does it take to cover all of that?”

Not as long as you are probably thinking!

My 2nd grader has about 1-1.5 hours of structured school time 4 days a week (the 5th day is our Community Day). This includes everything you see above in Language Arts (alternating AAR & AAS) and Math plus a daily 30 minute review of her Memory Work for the week, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors! (It never ceases to amaze me that my girls love playing in mud. Whatever. This kept them entertained for over an hour!)DSC03887.JPG

As a mother who is trying to first and foremost teach the hearts of my children while managing the household, wrangling the toddler and teaching the academics to my older children, Classical Conversations simplified our homeschool in ways I am not sure any other program out there could.

I am NOT saying CC is the only way to homeschool your children, however, if what you are doing isn’t working and you constantly feel overwhelmed and like you just aren’t covering it all adequately, take a deeper look into Classical Conversations. It just might be what you are looking for!

Please note: This is not a sponsored post at all. It is simply from the heart of one CC Mama who is just incredibly grateful today - and every day - to have found Classical Conversations!
