Homeschool Highlights {February}

Language Arts

We only have 7 lessons left in All About Reading Level 1! One day I left (in the middle of a phonics lesson) to get Sarge up from his morning nap and I came back to find Little Bug had written “I leke class” (I like class) with the letter tiles!

Sweet Pea did a lot of Valentine activities and games during the month of February. By the end of February, we had picked back up with All About Reading Pre-Level which Sweet Pea was very excited about!

We continue to read the Magic Tree House series for our Read Aloud time every day. Both girls are enjoying these books so much.

Independent Work

Ever since Little Bug finished A Reason for Handwriting K, I have been trying to figure out what to do next for handwriting. I started having her copy Bible verses and History Memory Work Sentences. The History Sentences are just too long for her to copy in one sitting and copying half of a sentence takes away from the benefits of copywork. I found 180 Days of Copywork by Kathy Gossen. I decided to have Little Bug do the Kindergarten Copywork because she could use some more practice with letter formation. Towards the end there are some short Bible verses to copy. Little Bug continues to work on Explode the Code Book 1.

Sweet Pea continues to do well with her Independent Work. She practices writing her letters and plays LA and math games to reinforce concepts we’ve learned.

Math

We’ve pulled out the Horizons Math K workbook again after taking a break from that to focus on learning and memorizing basic addition and subtraction facts. Because we are still working on basic math facts, we are doing 2 Horizons lessons per week. Soon, we will be doing 4 lessons per week and finishing up the second workbook! Little Bug daily practices her math facts and will until I believe they are in her mind for good!

Sweet Pea did a lot of Valentine math activities and games this month.

Classical Conversations

We are on the final 6 weeks of Cycle 1 and it is amazing how quickly these 24 weeks are flying by! Sweet Pea was the special helper for her tutor one week so I took a picture of her helping to demonstrate the science experiment for that day.

Both girls enjoy map tracing and blob mapping. The map below is one Little Bug traced of Africa and some of the surrounding continents.

We had a Break Week between Weeks 18 and 19. I found some fun ways for us to review all the Memory Work we have learned so far. I wrote a post about 4 games we played during our Break Week. They were all super easy to prepare and super fun to play!

Valentine’s Day

We enjoyed making some Valentine Bookmarks to take as our Valentines to exchange with our CC friends. One afternoon, we did Cotton Ball Heart Painting as a Valentine craft. Sarge joined us at the table and painted with water!

President’s Day

The week of President’s Day we spent two days learning about Washington and Lincoln by doing some activities and crafts and reading some books.

Two more months and we will have completed our 3rd year of homeschooling!
