What CC Looks Like {ages 6, 4 & 1}

Nov 20, 2015

We’ve finished our first semester of Classical Conversations. I thought it would be interesting to document what CC looks like at the age my children are now. I will write what CC looks like for us on a daily and weekly basis. Then I will state my CC expectations for each child at this age.

Little Bug is 6 years old and Sweet Pea is 4 years old. Both girls are in the Foundations program. Sarge is 1 year old and spends the morning with Grams and Gramps while we attend Community Day.

CC on a Daily Basis

Our goal is to review the week’s Memory Work every school day. We begin our school day by reading a Bible story together and then we move right into our CC Memory Work review time. We spend approximately half an hour reviewing. I will write a post specific to how we review soon.

CC on a Weekly Basis

Every week we join go to our Community Day where we are introduced to the week’s new Memory Work. We also participate in a science experiment or project, have a fine arts lesson and give a 1-3 minute presentation. To read more specifics about Community Day, click here.

Expectations

Little Bug – 6 years old

Little Bug has blown my expectations out of the the water! I did not expect her memorize much this first year because I planned to keep things simple and just get our feet wet with CC. That’s the thing about CC though. It is meant to be simple and simple works. Little Bug has memorized the majority of the History, Science, Timeline and Math memory work for Weeks 1-12 of Cycle 1!

Sweet Pea – 4 years old

Sweet Pea is a blessed little girl to enter CC at age 4. When I see her in her class with all the other 4 and 5 year olds, I am envious of the education that is ahead of all of them. I am so grateful I can give this education to all 3 of my children! That being said, Sweet Pea will go through Cycles 1 and 2 three times and Cycle 3 twice before she enters the Challenge program in high school. She has A LOT of time to learn all the Memory Work and anything that she is learning at age four is a bonus in my eyes. She is learning some of the Memory Work – more than I expected for our first year and her only being four years old. It’s simply amazing, but this is how God designed a child’s brain to learn, so I guess I shouldn’t be so shocked at the results I am seeing from both of my girls.

Sarge – 1 year old

Sarge still has three years before he can officially begin CC. He knows CC Community Day is his day with Grams and Gramps! One morning, right after everyone woke up and we were getting dressed, I told the girls, “Get moving, today is CC day!” Sarge immediately started waving! He apparently knows “CC Day” means we are all leaving and he is going to be picked up by Grams. My mom picks him up at our house just before it is time for us to leave for CC. Sarge has to watch us leave in our car before he is ready to get in Gram’s car! He watches our car all the way down the road and until we turn the corner. At 1 year old, Sarge already enjoys the CC CD we listen to nearly every time we are in the car. On a recent trip, Sarge was getting fussy towards the end of the drive and the only thing that calmed him down was the CC Memory Work CD!
