Yertle the Turtle {Letter Y, Yellow, Turtles}

{Letter of the Week}

This week we read Yertle the Turtle and the letter of the week was Letter Y. Sweet Pea loved all the stories in this book (there were three) and we read them all multiple times! Yertle learns a good lesson about being kind to others – a lesson Sweet Pea needed to be reminded of! Sweet Pea painted her Letter Y yellow and then glued the yellow yarn on the letter. She did her Do-A-Dot Letter Y in all red. Red is her favorite color now and she reminds us of that often!

{Turtle}

Sweet Pea got to make a paperplate turtle! She tore brown and green construction paper and glued the pieces on the paperplate to make the turtle’s shell. Then we stapled on the head and four legs. Daddy came in the homeschool room to see what Sweet Pea was learning about and decided to put his own touch on the turtle! He made him into Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Raphael is Sweet Pea’s favorite because…he wears red! Sweet Pea LOVED this and when Little Bug got home from school, she found the turtle and came running to me asking what we had done in school that day!

{Yellow, Flowers}

Another day Sweet Pea made a yellow collage from pictures we cut from a magazine. Little Bug helped by drawing several pictures of yellow things! The last activity tied in well to our current science unit! I adapted the Ready-Made activity to something I used to do with my 4th graders when I taught in the public schools! We learned all about the parts of a flower by using a cupcake paper (flower), popsicle stick (stem), felt paper (leaves) and yarn (roots)! We also learned what every plant needs to grow: sunlight, rain and soil.

{Yogurt Pops}

We made Yogurt Pops by mixing 2 cups yogurt, 1.5 cups of orange juice and 1 tsp. vanilla. It is still freezing in the freezer so the jury is still out on whether they are good! It’s always fun to learn about fractions and measuring while cooking!
