Homeschool Highlights {October}

If not for Gramps Little Bug would not be doing much formal learning. Gramps is always willing to be Little Bug’s teacher when I am unable! Here he is reading the Bible story to the girls and then they had a Science lesson. We are finishing up our unit on the Human Body by watching several of our Magic School Bus shows that have to do with the Human Body (germs, digestion, circulation).

The 3 R’s are going well for Little Bug! She excels in her All About Reading. Last week we started working through her first Fluency sheet and she read most of the words on the page perfectly! Her handwriting amazes me. She has taken great strides in her writing capabilities. Gramps has done the majority of the 22 Horizons math lessons that she has completed with her. Instead of using the number stamps that I bought for her to use to “write” the answers in her math workbook, she has been writing the numbers with her pencil.

When Little Bug has done school with Gramps & Grams, I have sent BOB Book Printables for her to do. She enjoyed the games and activities for Book 1 & 2. She has completed the first two books in the first BOB Books set. She even got some handwriting practice in as she wrote the words she made from the dice game we played.

We made it to the Pumpkin Patch on October 26th!

The girls made a trip to the mountains with Grams and Gramps from October 16-22. The plan was for us to come up for a long weekend, but we got 1 hour and 45 minutes up the road and turned around because Sarge was not traveling well at all and it was going to literally take us all night to get there because of having to stop to feed him every 3 hours for 1 hour. Plus, Sweet Pea threw up and had a 102 temperature! The next morning she was absolutely fine and I think God did that to give us even more incentive to turn around because He knew it was too much to try to attempt that trip with Sarge in this condition. We will all go the mountains this Spring!

The girls got ice cream at Kilwins, went to the lake, went to the playground in the girls’ camp, ate at 12 Bones and went on a long hike!

We did one Pumpkin Craft! It actually turned out disastrous because Sarge was sleeping soundly when I decided to get the paint out, but then woke in pain so I ended up running between him and the girls. Sweet Pea ended up painting the entire white bottle of paint onto her paper and she was covered in paint once I finally declared painting time was OVER. The Thumpkin Prints turned out cute, anyway! Sweet Pea used her thumb to make a pumpkin. Little Bug started but then “messed up” and ended up painting a pumpkin the “right way”. We had read the book From Seed to Pumpkin and learned how a pumpkin grows from a tiny seed in just 4 months.
