Kindergarten Read Alouds

Aug 13, 2014

We love reading chapter books! I usually read them to Little Bug after we’ve finished our school work for the day and before she goes to her bedroom for rest time. I saved many of the chapter books I had as a 4th grade teacher to one day read to my own children. I am thrilled the day has come to pull these books out of the box, dust them off and enjoy the stories with Little Bug! We started reading these during the summer prior to starting Kindergarten.

Pee-Wee Tales by Johanna Hurtwitz – Pee-Wee, a guinea pig, learns valuable lessons about freedom and friendship when he is let loose from his cage in Robbie’s bedroom and into a park in New York City. Little Bug really enjoyed this book. It was a cute story. I enjoyed the parts where Pee-Wee was exploring the park and the author would use descriptive language to describe what Pee-Wee was seeing for the first time. It was fun for Little Bug to try and figure out what the author was describing. Highly recommend this book as a K Read Aloud.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren – I saw this book on Amazon and it immediately brought back childhood memories! I remember watching the Pippi movies with my brother. Little Bug was hooked by the first chapter and we read this entire book in just two days. We laughed at Pippi’s adventures and her unusual ways of doing things. Little Bug said Pippi reminds her of herself and she is right! We will be reading the other Pippi books too. The book says for ages 8+ and there were some parts that were a tad over Little Bug’s head but for the most part Little Bug comprehended the book and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White – This is most certainly a classic and I couldn’t wait to be able to read it to Little Bug! Such a beautiful story about a little pig named Wilbur and his friend, Charlotte. A must-read Read Aloud!

My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Gannent – Little Bug loved this book. The adventures along the way, and the clever ways used to deter the enemies so the dragon could be rescued kept Little Bug wanting me to read “just one more chapter”. Even Sweet Pea got in to this book and brought it to me to read to her one day.

Anne of Green Gables (Great Illustrated Classics) by L. M. Montgomery – Anne reminded Little Bug of Pippi so she enjoyed this story a lot. There were parts that were over her head, but I would stop and we would talk about them.

Mystery Behind the Wall (The Box Car Children) by Gertrude Warner

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson

Twister Trouble (Magic School Bus) by Ann Schreiber – Magic School Bus books are some of our favorite read alouds right now. Little Bug enjoyed traveling with the Magic School Bus through a tornado!

High Tide in Hawaii (Magic Tree House) by Mary Pope Osborne – Magic Tree House books are always a hit! Jack and Annie had to figure out how to save their friends from a big tidal wave that is coming!

Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder – I couldn’t wait to read this to Little Bug so I was thrilled when she chose this book as her next Read Aloud. Such a classic story that captivates children and adults alike.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary – Another classic! Little Bug had a hard time stopping after each chapter because she was anxious to know what would happen to Ralph next.

Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder – This is the 2nd book of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. This book tells of Laura and her family leaving the Big Woods and heading out to the prairie. The events of life on the prairie during each season – summer, winter, fall and spring – are accounted for in this book. I love how these books portray what life was like in ways even a five-year-old can understand.

Pippi in the South Seas by Astrid Lindgren – Little Bug loves Pippi! If Pippi were a real girl, she and Little Bug could probably be very good friends. Little Bug loves to read about Pippi’s adventures with Tommy and Annika.

Mercy Watson: Six Pig Tales by Kate DiCamillo – We got this Mercy Watson book set for Little Bug for Christmas. Both she and Sweet Pea enjoyed each of the 6 stories in this set. Mercy Watson is a pig that loves toast that has been slathered in butter and that often gets him into predicaments! These are very short chapter books that even a 3-year-old can enjoy.
