Mudpies to Magnets {Review}

Jul 09, 2014

We absolutely loved Mudpies to Magnets! I highly recommend this book and have been completely impressed by most of the experiments we did from this book during Little Bug’s PK4 year.

Here’s what you can expect to find in Mudpies to Magnets:

  • preschool experiments for the 2-5 year old
  • materials required are easy to find
  • a list of vocabulary words to use while doing the experiments to explain what is happening
  • a list of needed materials is provided for each experiment
  • fun, engaging experiments
  • </ul>

It is fun to have an activity that both of my girls can participate in together! That’s another reason I love homeschooling. We can learn so much together. I also love the fact that we did this at Grams and Gramps’ house 1-2 times per week. What special memories were made!

With them being 4 and 2 years old (last year) there has been some chaos at times, but that comes along with the territory of doing science experiments with preschoolers! It does help to have all materials prepared and ready to go and Grams is wonderful about doing that!

Here are two experiments we’ve did to give you an example of what you will find in Mudpies to Magnets:

    Rainbow in a Jar

All we needed for this experiment was: water, different shapes of glass vases/jars, food color dye and sugar. The girls put drops of the dye in water and watched the designs the dye made in the water!

Look at Sweet Pea’s sweet little face! She loves getting in on the action of these experiments and it is so precious! We had different shaped glass containers to experiment with.

The last part of this experiment was to put sugar in one jar and compare the dye in a jar with sugar and without sugar. We observed that the jar with sugar kept the dye from sinking to the bottom on the jar!

    Put the Sunny Side Up

For this experiment we needed: cardboard, construction paper and different objects (some solid and some that had holes). Oh! And a sunny day!

We went outside and found a sunny spot in the yard. Then we laid the cardboard piece on the grass and put the construction paper on the cardboard. The girls laid the objects all over the paper in the sun.

We left everything sitting in the sun outside through lunchtime and naptime!

After naptime we checked on our experiment. The girls found the sun had faded the construction paper that was exposed to the sunlight and the parts of the paper that were covered with the objects were still dark!

The girls took all the objects off the paper and then matched them to their spots on the paper!

I would recommend this book to any homeschool family with preschoolers!
