Sweet Pea’s ABC School {Letter Mm & Letter Nn}
May 19, 2014
The purpose in ABC School with Sweet Pea is not for her to master her letters and sounds. She is only two. My main goal with ABC School is simply to expose her to the letters and to get her used to structured learning time for when I start PK3 with her at the new school year. She is learning more than I probably think she is because one day last week, instead of napping at naptime, she could be heard singing at the TOP OF HER LUNGS, “The A says /a/. The A says /a/. Every letter makes a sound, the A says /a/.”
I can probably credit that to the Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD considering we haven’t done letter A yet because we are following The Measured Mom’s Alphabet Curriculum and she teaches the letters from the easiest to write to the hardest! If you have a toddler or preschooler and don’t have that DVD, buy it today! Best $7.50 you will spend all week, guaranteed!!
All that to say, if I was teaching Sweet Pea with the intent of her learning all the letters by sight, I would not speed through two letters in one week like I did this week. We did two letters this week because we had made a last minute trip to the mountains and we were a week behind. I really want to finish ABC School with Sweet Pea in time to start Ready-Made Preschool Level 1 with her at the beginning of the new school year.
During this “Two letter week” we only did the letter for the ABC Book we are making and the craft. Oh, and of course we read The Little Letter Books because that would be a tragedy in our house to leave those out!
For Letter Mm Sweet Pea got to marble paint! It was her first experience and I must say marble painting was a huge hit with her. All you need is a box, paint and some marbles. Roll the marbles in the paint, drop them in the box and Sweet Pea went to town rolling the marbles in the box and watching the marbles paint her Letter M!
Because she loved to marble paint so much, her craft for the Letter Mm was to marble paint again! This time I just put a white sheet of paper in the box and let her choose her paint colors and she was having a blast.
Our Letter Mm books were If You Give a Moose a Muffin and Are You My Mother? And The Little Letter M Book!
For Letter N, Sweet Pea pasted torn brown construction paper onto her Letter N to make a nest. Then she glued the eggs into the nest. Our Letter N craft was to make a Night Sky. Sweet Pea painted the night sky with watercolor paint and then she glued tiny rhinestones to make stars.
We read My “n” Book, The Napping House and The Little Letter N Book.
Next week is Letter Yy!
