Ready-Made Preschool {Review}
Jan 08, 2014
Little Bug is a smart little girl and she loves “learning time” but I knew jumping into Kindergarten curriculum with her during her PK4 year wouldn’t be the best option for her.
Ready-Made Preschool has been the perfect bridge for this year when she has mastered preschool skills but isn’t quite ready to dive into a true Kinder curriculum.
{What Does Ready-Made have to Offer?}
1. Lowercase letters and letter sounds.
I wanted to make sure Little Bug had a very good foundation of knowing her letter sounds this year and Ready-Made is definitely giving her this foundation.
Every week there is a “Letter of the Week” and through Letter Hunts, making a page in her ABC book, playing games, reading a story and making a Letter Craft the letter and letter sounds are taught and enforced daily.
Whether your child is learning the letter sounds for the first time or just needs reinforcement of letter sounds, Ready-Made Preschool will help you achieve these goals with your child.
2. The formation of letters is taught in a variety of hands-on activities that do not require the preschooler to use pencil and paper.
Little Bug loves writing her letters in the salt, with play-doh and in shaving cream! I added in a few other ways to write letters as well. These activities are strengthening Little Bug’s fine motor skills and preparing her for the next step of learning to write her letters with paper and pencil.
3. Science, Social Studies and Math are integrated into the weekly lessons via hands-on learning activities.
Ready-Made is a well-rounded curriculum. We’ve learned about animal habitats, the globe, community helpers, seasons, dinosaurs, the five senses and more! There have been several math activities centered upon math skills such as one-to-one correspondence, numbers 1-20, number recognition, fractions, measurement and bar graphing. All of these concepts were taught using hands-on activities that greatly appealed to Little Bug.
4. Every week you are reading good, quality literature.
There is a book to read for every week. All books on the list can be found on Amazon or the library. I have had no trouble at all finding titles at our local library. The key is gathering the books before you actually need them. This way, if our library doesn’t have a title, there is time for them to order it for us before the week comes when we will need to read the book. I have ordered a few of the titles off Amazon if it was a book I wanted in our home library.
The books have all been quality literature and stories that preschoolers just love. The books are rich in vocabulary and art work and have a learning component that is used well in the lessons.
{Why Moms Love Ready-Made Preschool}
1. Materials are already gathered and prepared for you.
Besides all the reasons already listed above, there is something special about Ready-Made that sets it apart from all the other Preschool Homeschool Curriculums I’ve seen.
There are a million and one resources and fun ideas out there of learning activities that you can do with your preschooler. You pin them on Pinterest thinking it will be a great learning activity for your preschooler. Then the time to actually do the activities comes and you realize you need to buy xyz from the store and/or gather xyz from your supply closet at home. Then you need to print this out and cut that out.
This is not how Ready-Made Preschool works! Ready-Made Preschool is an “open and go” preschool curriculum. The majority of the materials you need to teach each lesson are provided, prepped and organized for you and arrive on your doorstep ready to be used!
(There are a few materials that obviously can’t be shipped in a box and you will need to gather those. But it is very minimal gathering and the materials – like tinfoil and a paper towel roll – are items you probably already have laying around your house.)
Our materials arrived in a manila folder but I organized everything into file folders by week. Every week I take the file folder and put the supplies and materials by the four days of lessons into our workboxes and then we are ready to go for the whole week!
2. Ready-Made is easily transportable.
One day per week we do school at my parents’ house. All I have to do is grab the workbox for that day and everything I need for that day’s lessons is ready to be transported to my parents’ house for school that day.
3. The lesson plans are well written and very easy to follow.
There is a daily lesson plan book included in the package. The first page includes a nice chart with the following information: story title and letter of the week, list of activities for each day, list of materials already provided for each day’s lesson (makes organizing my workboxes SUPER easy) and a list of materials I need to gather for certain days.
The lesson plans tell you exactly what concepts to teach for each lesson and are very easy to follow. While the lessons are not totally scripted, there are suggestions on what you could say to your child if you need direction in what to say.
{The Cost of Ready-Made Preschool}
There are many free Preschool Curriculums out there that cover everything you need to teach your preschooler in a year. I’ve looked through probably all of them on all the homeschool blogs! Some of them look very good and very fun, but none of them arrive on your doorstep with everything you need to teach for the year gathered, prepped and ready to go! And, that is why they are free and why Ready-Made Preschool is not.
The only reason I hesitated at all in going with Ready-Made was because of the cost. It wasn’t even that I necessarily thought it was too expensive; it was because I knew all these free resources were out there and I wondered if shouldn’t take advantage of them.
And then I broke down the cost of Ready-Made Preschool.
I bought the first 10 weeks of Ready-Made Preschool, Level 2. My total bill was $113.00. $100 was for the first 10 weeks of the curriculum and $13 was the shipping fee. (Please Note: I opted to NOT purchase the “General Supply” package because I already have everything included in that package.)
When I broke down the $113.00 that we had spent in to how much Ready-Made Preschool was costing us per week and per day, I was shocked!!!
Per week Ready-Made Preschool is costing us $11.30.
Per day Ready-Made Preschool is costing us $2.82.
For under $3 a lesson (day), I am teaching my preschooler and I have everything I need to do so at my fingertips!!!!
{What Does Little Bug have to say about Ready-Made Preschool?"}
The first “Break Week” we had where I did not plan to do Ready-Made, Little Bug broke down in tears when I told her that we would not be doing Ready-Made Preschool and instead would be doing other activities. She wanted to do Ready-Made and was heartbroken that we were not going to be doing it that week. Little Bug absolutely loves Ready-Made Preschool. The activities are engaging, hands-on and she is learning new things every week.
{Closing Thoughts}
Kate Funk, the creator of Ready-Made Preschool, is so sweet. I have corresponded with her via email when making my orders and she is always quick to respond to me in a reasonable amount of time. Once I place my orders, they have each arrived in a very timely manner. One time, my order was not correct when it arrived to my doorstep and she quickly took care of the problem and mailed me the correct materials as well as a free children’s book as compensation for the inconvenience of my order not being correct. I have been very impressed with the professional way she does business.
If you are looking for an easy way to engage your preschooler in fun, interactive, hands-on activities, Ready-Made Preschool is an excellent choice of curriculum. Having everything ready to go and not having to gather supplies each week is a true blessing.
Ready-Made Preschool has tremendously blessed my family this year and I am considering doing Level 1 with Sweet Pea in the Fall!
