David & Goliath {Letter Dd, Dinosaurs, Measurement, Armor of God}

{Books We Read}
This week we read the story of David and Goliath from several children’s books and Bibles! Because our letter of the week was the letter Dd, we learned about dinosaurs! We went to the library and checked out several books about dinosaurs. Because we believe in a creationism and not evolution, I had to be careful what I read from the books. Any time the books said, “Millions of years ago…” I said, “Many years ago…” instead. Our read aloud book this week was Magic Tree House Dinosaurs. Little Bug really got a lot out of reading this book. It was a great information book about dinosaurs and had the dinosaurs organized by meat-eating and plant-eating dinosaurs. There was also an image of each dinosaur with a human standing beside it so you could see how big the dino was compared to a human. We read some fiction stories about dinosaurs too: Danny and the Dinosaur, How Do Dinosaurs Go to School? and How Big was a Dinosaur?
{Armor of God}
Ready-Made Preschool is a Christian curriculum and I love that they have incorporated the story of David and Goliath into the curriculum. We learned about the Armor of God that He has given us in order to fight against sin in this world and to stay strong in the Lord like David was when he went to fight the giant. Little Bug drew herself on a piece of paper then she used the Armor of God stickers to place the armor on herself. As she worked on this we talked about each piece of armor as she put it on her drawing of herself. Little Bug got to make a Shield of Faith and the Sword of the Spirit.
{Measurement}
We got out a tape measure to see how big 9 feet tall is because that is how tall Goliath was! I first showed Little Bug an inch. Then I told her that 12 inches makes 1 foot. And 9 feet was how tall Goliath was! I had her lay down beside the tape measure and I took a picture so she could see how much taller Goliath was than her.
{Bible}
We started reading the story of Moses this week. We focused on the early days of Moses when his mother made a basket for him and placed him in the river so that he would not be killed. We talked about how God protected Moses as a baby because He knew He had something very important for Moses to do as a man. We talked about Miriam (Moses’s sister) and how she watched Moses as he floated in the river and then went and got her mother to care for Moses when Pharaoh's daughter pulled him out of the river. Little Bug enjoys the pages from Learning About God (left) and Bible Nuggets from A to Z (right) way more than I thought she would. I was prepared to put these books aside until Kindergarten but they are a perfect fit to our learning for this year.
{Letter of the Week}
Our Letter of the Week was Letter Dd! I was amazed at the capitol and lowercase letter D Little Bug made in the salt! She did a super job in writing both of those letters. Her letter d craft was to put the dinosaur stickers on the d. She made her Letter Dd page in her ABC Book and also did her Do-A-Dot Letter Dd. She made the Letter Dd with her Wikki Stix too.
{Dinosaurs}
We had so much fun learning about dinosaurs! The item in her Mystery Box this week was a dinosaur (that didn’t fit in the box so I just put it beside the box). Each week Little Bug has a Letter Hunt where she is to walk around the house and find something that starts with the letter of the week. She is to tape the Letter Dd to the objects she finds. We always have a hard time finding things that start with the letter of the week but this week was easy: she put her letter d on the dinosaur. Before we went to the library to get books about dinosaurs, we looked on the internet for pictures of dinosaurs and found a lot! We found a Cut and Paste Dinosaur that I printed for both girls to do after naptime. Sweet Pea was cracking us up with that dinosaur. She was saying, “Dinosaur bite me!!”.
{Fall Craft}
Our fall craft this week was one that Little Bug requested we make. We made Indian Hats last year and they were just as big a hit this year as last year!
{Homeschool Group Missions Week}
We hosted our homeschool group at our house. It was Mission’s Week. Since my mom grew up in Brazil as a Missionary Kid she came to tell the children all about Brazil. She showed them a (real) stuffed alligator from Brazil, a piranha, the Brazilian flag, coconuts and more! She sang them a song in Portuguese and told them how to say “hi” and “bye”. She told them how her parents went to Brazil to tell other people about Jesus. The children were very engaged and my mom was great with them. They got to try a Brazilian food (Pao de Queijo – cheese bread). Then we made 7 Operation Christmas Child boxes for children to receive all over the world this Christmas. It was precious to see a bunch of preschoolers putting all the things in the boxes. They did an excellent job with the help of the moms. After we made the boxes the children got to make a maraca because Brazilians love lively music. They all ran around the deck shaking their maracas.
