P Week!
Jul 26, 2012
Little Bug made polka dots on the letter Pp, using a pencil and pink and purple paint! She dipped the pencil eraser in the paint and then made the polka dots on the paper.
We learned about Planets! (I even learned something, too!)
First we counted to see how many planets there are. There were 8, so I assumed I had accidentally thrown Pluto away. When we got to my parents’ house, my mom and I tried to reprint the planets only to notice Pluto was not included at all in the printable! So we googled and…Pluto is no longer considered a planet?!? Okay. That is strange to me. How can they call Pluto a planet one day and then just decide it is no longer a planet the next?!
We looked to see what letter each planet starts with. We compared and contrasted several of the planets. We noticed they are different sizes, different colors, some have rings and some do not but they are all circles (we haven’t learned about 3D shapes yet). Little Bug learned she lives on planet Earth. I think her most favorite part was when I told her that one of the planet’s name was the same of a Disney Character and started with the letter P! We also talked about outer space and other objects out there such as the moon, stars and sun. We talked about God creating it all!
Then we made a mobile using a hanger and pipe cleaners!
I realize planets and outer space is something that a 3 year old probably cannot really grasp the concept of, but…I feel like exposure to these concepts is important no matter the age!
I found a Princess Preschool pack and we played a game where Little Bug categorized objects as being a “Princess” or “Not Princesses”. I love her little hands in the picture below!
Little Bug is really into patterns lately! We worked on these AB patterns using Pumpkins and the Letter P.
We learned how many foods are made from plants! Little Bug matched the food to the plant that it was made from.
Little Bug did her first simple addition problems (click on “Download your Pumpkin Printables here to find this activity)! We learned what a “plus sign” and “equal sign” look like. We added the pumpkins together to see how many pumpkins there were in all.
We read a story about a Princess and her friend (Click on Download your Princess Printables here). Then Little Bug found some of the sight words in the story.
Little Bug did a pre-writing activity.
Little Bug enjoyed this Princess Puzzle.
We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin…from seed to pie! We put the events in sequential order.
We made pizzas (using felt paper and construction paper!). The red circles were the pizza crusts with sause. And then we also have cheese, pepperonnis and ham. I incorporated a little fraction lesson at the last minute after we made the pizzas!
Little Bug loved making her pizza! I covered the entire “pizza” with glue and she put all the “toppings” on!
Ta-da!! She made the pizza on the left and I made the pizza on the right because she wanted Mommy to make a pizza with her.
Then I got the idea to cut one pizza into halves and teach Little Bug some fractions! We talked about two halves making a whole.
I asked Little Bug how many pieces we would need to cut the other pizza into to have one piece for each member of our family. She named all the people in our family and then we counted and she said, “Four!”.
So we cut the other pizza into fourths.
This was a very fun way to introduce the concept of fractions to Little Bug.
We made a penguin with our handprints! We used felt paper to make our handprints because we didn’t have any black paint. The white of penguin is also felt paper. The orange is paint.
